Water temperature at Vallø – a season with live readings

The solar-powered sensor on our pier has delivered live water temperatures all season, on the web, on phones and on Yr. Now it is resting for the winter.

This summer, anyone wondering whether it was warm enough for a swim at Vallø could simply check. A small sensor on our pier measured the water temperature all season and published it live.

How it works for the user

  • Live temperature on www.aashansen.no/vallo, updated every quarter of an hour, with graphs and the day’s statistics.
  • Save it as an app: the page can be added to the home screen of a phone and opens like an ordinary app.
  • Also on Yr: the readings are shared with Yr’s bathing temperature service, so they show up where many people already look.
  • Widgets that other websites can embed to show the current temperature.
  • A display indoors with the latest reading, so you can check it without a phone.

The sender on the pier runs on a small solar panel and a battery, without any cables to the house, and sends its readings wirelessly over several hundred metres. It has run on its own all season.

Resting for the winter

The sensor is now taken in for the winter, and the page says so until it is back on the pier in spring. Next season it will be back with a few improvements.

Something similar for your own pier, cabin or boat? The system can be adapted to almost any sensor – see the project page or use the contact form.
